JEANNINE GRAMICK
Catholic nun and member of the Sisters of Loretto
Jeannine Gramick, a Catholic nun and member of the Sisters of Loretto, taught Mathematics at Notre Dame of Maryland University in the early 1970s. In 1977, she co-founded New Ways Ministry, an organization working for justice and reconciliation of LGBT Catholics and the Church. Although her book, Building Bridges: Gay and Lesbian Reality and the Catholic Church was the subject of a Vatican investigation, she has received dozens of awards from Catholic organizations as she continues her LGBT ministry. Her struggles with Church authorities are documented in the film, “In Good Conscience: Sister Jeannine Gramick’s Journey of Faith.” In 2015, Sister Jeannine, along with 50 LGBT persons and their families, received a warm welcome from Pope Francis at the Vatican.
